Just when I thought things were looking up, things took a turn for the worse. Today was my 4th day to stay home with Tayler. While she is still not 100%, I had hoped that she would be better to return on Monday and I could return as well.
Then, today Colton came home with appears to be pink eye. I checked his temp and it is 99.9. He has the same symptoms Tayler had last Saturday. So, I may be taking him to the dr. tomorrow to see if he now has the flu. Of course he could not get sick this entire week I was home with Tayler... that would be too easy! Not sure what will happen if I keep missing.
When it Rains, it pours.
Everyone says God won't give you more than you can handle..... Dear God, I don't know how much more I can handle so feel free to let up at any time!
Please keep us in your prayers.

A bitter-sweet week
So this week has been bitter sweet for me.
As most of you know, last week I started student teaching. While I loved feeling independent and in my element, I really missed my kids. I wake up at 5am. The kids wake up at 6am. We leave at 6:30. I drop them off and then head to school. I usually don't pick them up til around 4:30 or 5. By the time we get home, dinner needs to be fixed, their breakfasts, my lunch, and baths to be given. Needless to say, we don't have much time for quality time because the kids and I are usually in bed about 8pm. It has definitely been a difficult transition for all of us.
On Friday I took the kids to the doctor because they had been coughing really bad, especially Colton. I wanted to catch whatever it was before the weekend. The dr. said that they just had a cold and gave us some cough medicine.
On Saturday afternoon, Tayler woke up from her nap with a high fever. She has had a fever ever since. I thought she just had a little stomache bug that would pass in a few days. She stayed home with my mom on Monday. Monday night her fever spiked to 103. I let me mentor teacher know that I would not be there and took Tayler into the dr. Tuesday. It turns out a child in Tayler's class had been diagnosed with the flu on Friday but I did not find that out until Monday afternoon. Worried that she might have the flu, I took her into the dr. Tuesday. Sure enough - the flu! Tayler was vaccinated but apparantly 15-30% of people vaccinated still get it. There is treatment for it but you have to get to it within 48 hours. We were well pass that deadline. So, now it is a waiting game. So, I have had to miss 4 days of student teaching this week. It is bitter because I hate already missing but is sweet because I get to take care of my baby. However, I have realized that I do need to work. After going to "work" all last week and now being home this week, I definitely prefer being out of the house.
There is a potential future job position I have expressed interest in and inquired about. All I will say for now is that it will allow me to have a job but also be very close to the kids... Hopefully it will all work out. Things are definitely starting to look up and feels like things are finally falling into place. Such a great feeling.

My 1st week of student teaching
Aside from waking up at 5 am, blisters on my feet and a sore back, I have had a GREAT week!
This past week was my first week of student teaching. I have an amazing mentor teacher! I am currently in 1st grade. This week I have been helping students individually with their math and reading, helping them stay on task, etc. I also focused on learning all of their names which was A LOT easier than I thought it would be. Knowing children's names makes being an authority figure much easier.
This coming week, I will be taking over social studies and possibly some math so I will be working on lesson plans this weekend, which I am oddly excited about. :) The following week, I will for sure be completely on my own because my mentor teacher will not be there one day.
Yesterday my mentor teacher told the principal that I was doing a wonderful job and the kids were already benefiting from me being there. (The class I am in is the inclusion class, which means there are special education children in there as well as several children who are repeating the grade. My mentor teacher requested a student teacher because she wanted more help.) Today my mentor teacher told me that I as doing a great job. She said that everything she has heard me tell the kids is right on target and that she sees that it comes naturally to me. :o) It felt great to hear these things on my first few days. And honestly, it does feel like it is coming naturally. I feel like being a teacher is what I am meant to do. I always questioned why I got pregnant right when I was starting nursing school. I now know because being a nurse is not what I was meant to do with my life. Although I have missed being away from the kids, I have also enjoyed feeling a sense of independence and accomplishment.
I am worried about the economy and the fact that all of the districts are laying off teachers and increasing the class size. It does worry me that I will not be able to find a job. But, I am just going to stay focused and positive and take each day at a time and hope that someone somewhere along the way picks me up.
The kids are doing great, but they are a little sick. I think the mixture of all the germs and colds at school as well as the weather has caused them to get a little sick too. The past few nights Colton has coughed all night and Tayler had a really raspy cough this morning. I was able to get them into the doctor this afternoon as the last appointment. The doctor gave us some medicine for coughing and congestion so hopefully they will be feeling better by the end of the weekend!
Well, I am going to go enjoy some quiet time. Every night this week, I have gotten in bed right after the kids because I have been so exhausted. So, I am going to enjoy some awake alone time! :)
Have a great weekend!

The Things You Learn...
I learned a lot of new things this week. On a humorous note, I learned...
- 1st grade is when A LOT of kids lose their front teeth.
- 1st graders have no shame when it comes to having gas... can you say air freshener?
- I never knew my feet, knees and back could all hurt this bad all at one time.
On a serious note, student teaching is going great! I haven't actually taught yet, I have to add up to that. But I have been working with students individually as well as helping the students stay on task and reteach the lower level students who fall behind during the lessons. I am in the 1st grade inclusion classroom, which means it is the classroom that has students of all abilities, including special education children. Even though it has been hard being away from my kids, especially Tayler, it has been nice being around other adults and in an environment where I feel like I fit, doing something I feel like I am really good at.
Happy Friday! and TGIF so I don't have to wear shoes and my butt can stay stuck to the couch! :)

Checking In
Yesterday I started student teaching. I am currently in a 1st grade classroom. I am loving it! I probably won't be posting during the week because I am just so exhausted! 5am comes VERY early for me.. I am still trying to adjust. By the time I get home, my feet and back hurt so bad all I want to do is go to bed!
Tayler is adjusting well to preschool. However, I can tell she really misses because she freaks out when I pick her up and won't let go of me til it's time to go to bed.
One another note... I found out yesterday that I PASSED my state certifcation exam that I took this past Friday. I was really worried I didn't pass because it was waaaaay harder than I had expected. But, I passed and now I can start applying for jobs for next school year!! I have taken both of my state exams and have taken all of my classes so now all I have to do is finish student teaching and graduate!
Well, I am off to do evening bath routines. Hope you are having as great of a week as I am!

This Weekend
Yesterday I took my state certification exam. I studied SOOO much for it, but I should have not studied at all. It was a test that there is literally no way to study for. We were allowed 5 hours to take it and I spent right at 4 hours. There were 140 questions. I will probably get my grades by Wednesday, but I am pretty determined that I did not pass. I know several people who did not pass. If for some odd reason I did pass, then it's a miracle and because I luckily guessed good. It was just extremely hard. If I do have to take it again, I'm not sure what I will do because there is absolutely no way to study for it.
Today I have been cleaning all day. My goal for this weekend is to try to get as much of the house cleaned and organized as possible. Since Kyle and I will both be having busy days outside of the home, I want us to be able to come home to a clean home and feel relaxed, not more stressed about how much has to be done. Since the kids will not be home all day pulling out everything they have and I won't be cooking multiple meals at home, it should hopefully stay clean for more than just a day.
So far I have cleaned the living room and Tayler's room. My plan is to do away with the playroom and put all of the toys in the kids' rooms. We have slowly been doing away with the playroom. We moved a tv and kyle's xbox in there (I was tired of him sitting in the middle of the living room and us not able to watch tv) and the computer desk to the playroom. So now it's been 1/2 media room, 1/2 playroom. But the kids just don't really play in there. They bring all of their toys to the living room or they stay in Colton's room since he has such a big room.
This past week I had to wake up early on several days. I am going to have to wake up for student teaching much earlier than Kyle because my school starts an hour before his. Last week was rough, especially with getting woken up with Kyle's snoring all night. I need to make sure, at least for the first week, I am well rested. So, my goal is to try and move the toys out of the playroom and try to move an extra bed into it. That way, if Kyle is keeping me up, I can go to another room so that I am not exhausted for school. Also, if he is working til 11pm, I don't want him waking me up when he gets home when I have to wake up in just a few hours. So, we are going to use the playroom as a media room/guest room to help us transition into our new routines because we have already realized this past week that it is going to be a very rough adjustment for all of us.
Well, my break is up so I am off to do more cleaning! I have A LOT to do!
Have a great weekend!

Busy week!
This week has been a crazy week for the kids and I!
Monday - Tayler started preschool. I met with my 1st grade student teaching mentor teacher.
Tuesday - I studied ALL day while the kids were gone. Amazing how much you can get done when it's quiet!!
Wednesday - I took the kids to preschool 30 minutes before I was supposed to be at a student teaching seminar at my university. They were closed! Apparantly sometime Tuesday night someone stole all the copper electrical wiring, so they had no heat, water or electricity. I basically freaked out. It was one of those moments where I just couldn't take anymore stress and I started balling! Luckily my mom was home and had no plans (other than to clean her house) so she was able to save the day!! She watched the kids and I went to my seminar.
Today - I had another student teaching seminar at my school.
Tomorrow - MY STATE CERTIFICATION EXAM!! Am I ready? no. Have I studied a lot? Yes, given how difficult it is to study with two loud children and constant interruptions. I still have some things to review that I was hoping to do tonight but it doesn't look like Tayler is going to be very cooperative... she is being pretty needy. I think it's because we have been separated for 3 days. I am hoping I can keep my cool tonight. Sometimes that is hard when I have a lot of stress from school and the kids are cranky.
This weekend my plan is to clean the house so that next week it will all be done. We are hardly going to be here so there is no reason it should not stay clean!
Monday I am going to get a much needed hair cut. I have not had my hair cut since before Tayler was born!! The preschool is open so I am going to spend a day ALONE because I NEVER have alone time!! I need to get a comfy pair of shoes, a pair of jeans and a couple of tops. Shopping is much, much, much easier without children!
Well, that's it for now. Keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow and that I keep my sanity tonight!

bad day turned good!!
Well, my day started pretty bad this morning. It was very different trying to get everyone up, fed and dressed and out of the house. (Tayler started preschool this morning!)
But, I am sitting her in such a GOOD mood!!
I just got back from meeting with my 1st grade mentor teacher I will be spending my 1st 6 weeks with, along with the assistant principal.
Last month, I was really upset about the placements I had been given. I had been given math-only placements in a school farther than I had expected. This was concerning for two reasons - 1. I will be certified in all subjects, not just math, so I NEED experience in all subjects. 2. A farther school = more gas = more money (keep in mind I will not be making a paycheck this semester.)
I prayed A LOT about it. I cried several times to God and asked him to please help me. I did what I learned to do when you can no longer handle something - I gave it to Him. I faught long and hard to have my placements changed and I couldn't deal with it anymore, so asked God to help me.
I read that God has 3 answers to prayers.
1. yes
2. no
3. I have something better planned.
I tried to stay positive and hope that He simply had something better planned. Well, he answered "yes" to one of my prayers - Last week I received notification that my 3rd grade math only placement had been changed to 1st grade all subjects.
Many future teachers want to work at the "good" "rich" schools. This past year, I decided that I would like to try working at a Title 1 school.
(A Title 1 schools receives federal funding because they have a high percentage of low-income families, typically 40% or more.)
In Title 1 schools, the students are typically at-risk for falling behind. The home life isn't always great and parent involvelment in academics is often low. A while back, I decided I didn't want to work in an upper class school. I want to work somewhere that I know I can make a difference in children's lives.
Well, today I found out that the school I have been placed at is a Title 1 school. So, God had something better planned for me, that's why I was left at my original placement. That's what I believe anyways. I gave my problems to Him and he answered them. :)
After meeting with my mentor teacher and the assistant principal, I am SOOO excited about starting next week! I cannot wait!! (I am also ready to have a routine and be in a place away from food all day so I can start shedding those pounds! ;) )
Anways, today's rough start has turned into a wonderful day!! and I just wanted to share my excitement with you!

Morning Routine?
Today was a big day for our household. Today was Tayler's first day of preschool, so today was my first day of having to get everyone up, fed and dressed. Let's just say everyone was a little cranky this morning....
I have devoted this week to trying to get us in a routine. Next week I start student teaching and I don't want to try and figure everything out the first morning.
Last night I packed my lunch and snacks and that was a huge chore in itself. I will be home this afternoon but I wanted to try to start getting used to all of my new responsibilities.
This morning was a trial run and I realized we definitely need work! I am so used to taking Colton to preschool with Tayler and I in our pajamas and now Tayler and I have to be dressed! That's over an extra hour needed!
I definitely did not realize how out of a routine we were until this morning. I am hoping that the rest of the week can lead us into more smooth sailing. I thought that I would be able to exercise in the mornings but after this morning, I am thinking that is not going to work out so well...

The Bottom Half
In anticipation of beginning student teaching in just over a week, I began trying on clothes, washing and organizing them. I must say, I am pretty excited to start! I feel like a kid who is excited for the first day of school trying to figure out what all I am going to wear. :)
So, after trying on clothes, I realized something.... I can't see my bottom half! Kyle and I haven't really gone out since we have had kids so I haven't really gotten dressed up much in the past few years. I just realized today that I NEED a full body mirror. I have no idea what the bottom half of my body looks like, if my shoes match, etc. I am also wondering if this could have been a subtle contribution to my weight gain since I really don't see what my entire body looks like.
So, my goal for this week is to try and find an inexpensive full size mirror that I can hang up. :)

Food Allergies!?
A few months ago, Tayler broke out in hives all over her body that only lasted for a few minutes. When I took her to the doctor, they said it could be anything... food allergies, her body's reaction to a virus, her reaction to something she breathed in, etc. We thought it was ketchup but she hasn't had a problem with ketchup. When she eats, the area around her mouth usually gets red but we thought it was just her having sensitive skin. None of us (me, kyle or Colton) have food allergies so we didn't think that's what it could be. So, today the kids had chicken nuggest, grapes, carrots, cauliflower and ranch. This is not the first time Tayler has eaten ranch with her veggies. She usually gets red on her face when the ranch gets on it, just like with the ketchup. Today, I gave her light ranch instead of the regular ranch. During and after lunch, this is what she looked like...
(left arm - the ranch did NOT get on her arm)

So, I am thinking she may be allergic to ranch or something that is in it, especially the light ranch. She is going to the doctor tomorrow for vaccinations so I am going to see what she says and if they can do any tests.
When Tayler was about 2 weeks old, she developed an allergy to the milk protein in my breast milk. She eventually grew out of it. She drinks whole milk and doesn't have any problems with it, as well as yogurt and cheese, so I am wondering if there is a specific ingredient that she may be allergic to. For now I will rely on Benadryl and hope we can figure out what's causing her to break out!
update: I compared the ingredients in ketchup, ranch and light ranch. They all have dried onion. The light ranch also has onion puree and today when she had the light ranch, she broke out all over (in the pictures.) She also broke out when she had salsa, which usually has onions. So, I am thinking she may be allergic to onions....
(her face - everywhere the ranch touches, including her forehead, she breaks out.)
(right arm - this happened about 5 minutes after she was done and out of her chair; you can also see her little thumb all red)

So excited!
So, I just received notification of a change to my student teaching placements. I will still be at the same school but instead of doing 3rd and 5th grade mathematics, I will now be doing...
1st grade - all subjects (where the kids stay with the same teacher all day)
&
5th grade - mathematics
I am VERY happy about my new arrangements. It is very important for me to have experience in more than just math. Even though I love math, I will be certified in every subject and will most likely get a job where I have to teach multiple subjects. So, I am happy about the change. In addition, I now get to see the very young age group and the old age group of my certification area.
I will be starting January 18th. Next week I will be transitioning Tayler into daycare so that she can get adjusted to it through shorter days and so that I can get some things done before I have to start (like a hair cut, trying on clothes by myself, taking my state exam, etc.)
I am SO excited about the near future! I love my children dearly and I know it will be hard to be away from them for long days but I must admit, I am excited about having a life outside of the home.
(p.s. They just opened a position at the school I am student teaching at. Wouldn't that be awesome if it was still open in a few months and I got it!?!? ;) )

Preparing for the Important Test
I am currently preparing for my state certification exam that will allow me to be a licensed educator. I am scheduled to take my exam on Friday, January 14th. I am starting my student teaching the following week so I wanted to get it out of the way so that (if I pass) I can focus completely on student teaching and spend my time in the evenings with the kids and not studying.
I made sure to schedule my courses where I would not have to take any classes this semester. I just do not want, or need, the extra stress. The next month will bring a new, and possibly difficult, transition for all of us. The kids will no longer spend most of their time with me, Kyle will have an increased role in at-home duties and I will be, for the first time in over two years, out of the house on a daily basis. Although the next few months will be different and difficult, I am looking forward to the good things that will come from it.
Tonight I did a practice test to gauge where my weaknesses and stengths are so I know what to focus my studying on for the my state certification exam. I had no idea the exam would be so difficult. I definitely have my work cut out for me the next 11 days! I am hoping that I am able to prepare enough for it. I am definitely worried now!
So, my week will be spent with my nose buried in study guides! FUN! (not) :)
