What's On My Nightstand

I have never really been an avid reader. I cannot remember ever reading when I was younger. In high school I usually purchased the Cliff Notes for reading assignments. Now that I am adult, going to the library scares me. It is so huge. How do you know how to pick out a book when there are so many?
I am so used to reading nonfiction books the past few years from basically educating myself from being in online classes that I really haven't had time to even think about reading for "fun".

This last semester I did read A Stolen Life by Jaycee Dugard. However, this can almost be classified as nonfiction because the author wrote about her own life and the events during the time she was held in captivity. Although this book was very dark and sad, I really enjoyed it.

I have really been wanting to read lately, especially since I have nothing but time and nothing much to do. I have heard a lot of people talk about 2 different books... The Hunger Games and 50 Shades of Gray. By looking at the reviews online, The Hunger Games is a hit. So, I purchased it at Wal-Mart on Wednesday evening.

As of this evening, I have completely finished reading it. Can you believe it? I don't ever read and I read a 400 page book in 3 days. I could not put it down. Each chapter had a cliff hanger and I was left dying to know what will happen next. This book was also on the dark side but very intriguing. I have had a mentally difficult week full of lots of stress and anxiety. Curling up on the couch to read has really calmed my mind. It is has only been a few hours since finishing The Hunger Games and I am already dying to know what happens in the next book. I had planned on purchasing it next week, but I can't wait. This is when having a kindle comes in handy... at the click of a button I have the book in my hand. So, I am excitedly off to begin the second book in the series...

P.S. As a teacher I now know first hand why so many kids hate to read.... they aren't reading things that are interesting to them!

Jesus Loves Me

"Ask, and it will be given to you. Seek, and you will find. Knock, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and he who seeks, finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened." (Matthew 7:7-8)

I have kept this verse in my mind the last few weeks. Today, I learned this Bible verse is true. God answers prayers and he loves me. :)

(I will elabortate more later when I am able to.)

Eating Clean

You may have noticed that last week I lost 4 pounds. This is much more than I have lost each week the past few weeks.
Last week I felt really discouraged after only losing 1 pound. I was talking with my Uncle and he told me about a 6 week program he and his wife did. Well, I decided I did not want to invest that kind of money in something that I didn't know if I could do or stick to. So, I bought the 6 day program for $10 and read it on my kindle. In the book, you answer a bunch of questions and figure out what your body type is. Then you follow a meal plan based on your body.

This plan is basically a plan to kickstart your metabolism and weightloss so that you feel motivated to continue. It also puts your metabolism in the way that is optimal for fat burning.
** I read in a different book about metabolism that we burn 70% of our calories throughout the day through our metabolism and only 30% through exercise.** During the first 4 days, I only exercised 1 time and lost a pound per day. Then you look at last week.. I exercised 6 days and lost 1.
My Plan (for the first 6 days)
No dairy. No processed food. No condiments. I figured it's only 6 days, why not? The ONLY thing I had a hard time with was not being able to eat processed salad dressing. Other than that, it was a breeze. However, I quickly learned how to use my spices, herbs (I LOVE cilantro) lemon juice and vinegar and by day #3, I actually enjoyed my bowl of greens.
5-6 small meals with fruits (certain ones), lean chicken, turkey and fish and veggies. 12 glasses of water (100 ounces).
I did not follow this plan perfectly. If I had, I am sure I would have lost a lot more. However, I have learned so much going forward.

What I have changed
Last week when I only lost 1 pound, I ate watermelon every single day. The books says watermelon is a big no-no for my body type. I cut out all salt and the only sugar consumed was in the natural low-sugar fruits that I ate. I was also eating "healthy" processed meals. Through reading these books about metabolism, I realized what eating clean means and how important it is. I bought all fresh, lean meat (no red meat). (I did buy frozen fish.) I seasoned and cooked everything myself. I knew exactly what I was putting in my mouth since none of it was processed.

Remember how I also said I had been working out harder than ever before and still only lost 1 pound? Apparantly that is a big no-no too. I won't go into detail becuase the book has all the details... but basically when you exercise hard and over your target heart rate, you burn sugar, not fat. The book says stair steppers, eliticals, climbing at an incline on the treadmill, etc. do not help you burn the fat. Guess what? I was doing all of those things. So, the past 6 days I also switched to the slow, long distance exercise that the book recommends.
What now?
The book offers suggestions as to how to continue losing weight and how to slowly add in certain foods to give yourself variety. There is a 6 week program that you can purchase to continue the program. However, at this point I am not going to do that. I learned a lot this week about how to prepare my meals, what I should be eating, how frequently, etc. So, for now I am going to try to continue to eat clean by adding in some other varieties of food. Basically the only things processed the books recommends eating is oatmeal, cream of wheat and rice. Everything else should be fresh. So, this is my plan and I am going to see how I do on my own.

The past few days have been extremely stessful for me. I have found myself in a rut because of the stress and anxiety that I have had and I have unfortunately made a few poor food choices. I would like to say that the few processed and greasy snacks I have had the past few days upset my stomache every time. Low calorie popcorn even made me have an upset stomache! My stomache has been so upset that I have really realized how important it is for my health to eat clean.

Is it or Isn't it?

Sunday night I purchased a book to read on my kindle. In it, the author discusses how not everyone's body is the same. Not everyone's metabolism is the same. And basically by figuring out the type of body you have, you can figure out the type of metabolism you have.

So, it gives you a series of questions to answer. If you agree with them, you check them off. Then after all the questions are completed, it puts the questions into 6 different groups. You then go and circle the numbers of the questions you checked and this allows you to see how many in each are checked. Ultimately this gives you your body type. I did figure out my body type and learned that I should not  be eating watermelon as it is full of sugar and my metabolism is so low that my body spends it's energy burning sugar, not fat. Well guess what? I ate watermelon EVERY day last week! I wonder if this why I only had a 1 pound loss?

Moving on.... when you find out your body type, there is a warning.... if you have 2 answers checked in group 6, you could have low blood sugar, aka hypoglycemia. If you have 5 or more answers checked, you may be very hypoglycemic... consult a physician. Well, I checked 7 out of the 8.

I did some research and found a lot of symptoms that I have had in the past few months..

- extreme nervousness and sometimes panic attacks. (I did actually have a mild panic attack. I thought it was just stress and anxiety but I looking back, I did not eat breakfast that morning and was very hungry.)
- feel very hungry after exercise
- tingling of the skin (I get very bad tingles in my fingertips.)
- hunger pains
- sick/dizzy feeling when you are late to a meal
- profuse sweating
- night sweats (hypoglycemia can occur at night since you go long periods without food.)
- nightmares
- extreme sleepliness (after eating certain foods)

Touching on the last one, extreme sleepiness. On Sunday, Kyle and I went out to breakfast with the kids and the family of someone he works with for Father's Day. I have designated Sunday as my day "off" from dieting. I ate more bread products than usual, as well as orange juice. When we got home at about 10:15, I felt extremely tired. This was weird to me because I had gotten a full night of sleep. I told Kyle I was going to lay in bed for a few minutes and rest. At 2:30 I woke up and forced myself to get out of bed. I felt like I could have slept several more hours. I did some research and read that this is very common in people who are hypoglycemic. (I won't go into the details as to why.)

So, I have a doctor's appointment set for Thursday morning. I am going to have a physical and have blood work done. They told me to fast that night and morning. So, basically from the time I have dinner to the time of my appointment will be about 14 hours. I am actually nervous about passing out because I usually feel hungry sick 30 minutes after waking up. This may be nothing or it could be something. Either way I am going to get answers and guidance.

A book is no longer a book

A book is no longer a book. A book has now become a digital file in a folder.

I am someone who loves technology. However, when I was given an Amazon Kindle by a few of my students and their parents for Christmas, I didn't know what to think. I thought it was cool but really had no idea how to use it. The thought of using a button instead of turning a page seemed  very odd to me. So, it has been sitting in the box ever since. (I have bought numerous paperback books since.)

But this evening I decided that I really wanted to purchase a book but I really didn't feel like going to the store or waiting for it to be delivered. So, I decided to try out the kindle. Not only was the kindle price cheaper, but with one click I had the book in my hands.

I am looking to buy a few other books to put into my professional library. However, I am going to by the paperback version of those... I can't accept technology when I am so used to highlighting, putting sticky notes on good ideas, etc. For now, since this is a pleasure read, I am going to see how this whole e-reader thing works out for me and see if this type of technology is something I am going to enjoy or not.

Weekly Weigh-In

Previous (over the past year): - 21 lbs
June 3: - 2 lbs
June 10: -3 lbs

This week: -1 lb

Total weight loss = 27 lbs

45 pounds left until I reach my goal.

There is only one thing that makes a dream impossible to achieve: the fear of failure.
- Paulo Coehlo

I read this quote on Friday. It reminded me of some things I went through this week. This week, I worked out really hard. I worked out for longer periods of time than ever before. I was so shocked at how much I could do if I just pushed myself. However, I made a few poor food choices. For some reason when I work out more, I eat more. I don't know why I do this. I know that this will only make me maintain my weight. If I exercise more, I have to eat less to lose. So why do I eat more? I don't know. Maybe I really am afraid of failure so I just help myself speed up the inevitable. But then I know this is the most motivated I have been about weightloss in the past few years. I know I have food addictions that I have to get over. Food is comfort for me.. for happiness, sadness, bordeom, etc. I have to figure out a way to get over this and try very hard to not do this anymore. I have to find a way to believe that I am NOT going to fail this time. I say it and a part of me does believe it but then the other part of me thinks about ice cream, pizza, mexican food and I doubt if I really am going to be able to do this. I was disappointed to only see 1 pound lost but 1 pound lost is better than 1 pound gained. Hoping that I can go into this week with more inner strength and not allow temptations to tempt me.

Wishing you and me both a great, successful week!
